My friend had asked me on more than one occasion to help her put together a quilt. Delighted that anyone in my circle showed an interest in the quilted arts, I finally made time to welcome her into the world of quilting. When she arrived at my front door, I couldn’t help but notice the huge puffy bags that she and her friend were carrying. The contents of the bags were revealed after catching up on the news of the day. Two quilts needed minor repairs. Easy task. But it was the third item that left me questioning my friend’s state of mind. She showed me an antique looking comforter and explained to me that this was her daughter’s “blankie” and that she wanted to make a quilt out of it. I knew that wasn’t happening, but after carefully examining the remains of this forty year old sentimental piece, I did figure out a way to use the salvageable fabric to create a pillow. A quick phone call to my friend’s daughter and she settled for a pillow rather than the desired quilt. Before leaving, three seams were sewn and my friend could see some semblance of a special gift to her daughter.
Eventually I did get some filling, stuffed it and hand-stitched the fourth side. The final project is shown below. My thoughts about this pillow — It’s truly special!!!
Looking for an interesting read????? I recommend Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye by David Ritz. This is a page turner, eye opener, and heart breaking account of the complicated life of the much admired musical genius.
Artfully yours,
